Max Change separates noise from real gamma exposure movement. A level can look identical on the chart for half an hour. Yet the hedging pressure behind it can be shifting hard minute by minute. This piece of the GammaContext Gex Panel is built exactly for that difference: it separates noise from real movement, window by window.
This guide covers what this heatmap measures, how to read it, and when that read matters more than the static level itself.
The tool compares current gamma exposure against what it was in earlier time windows: 1, 5, 10, 15, and 30 minutes. It shows the difference between those two moments. A large change in a short window tells you something moved fast, even if price hasn't reached any visible level yet. A small change, even while price is moving, tells you options positioning is still relatively stable.
This type of read has a well-known basis in technical analysis. According to Investopedia, rate of change measures how fast a value moves over a specific period. It's exactly that speed, not just direction, that helps distinguish a real move from minor fluctuation. This metric applies that same speed logic, but to gamma exposure instead of price.

For example, say total Net GEX reads 90K at 10:00 in the morning. At 10:05, that same Net GEX drops to 62K. The heatmap shows that -28K shift in the 5m column, with a more intense color than the rest of the columns.
The 15m and 30m windows stay relatively neutral: the big change is recent, it wasn't building up from before. That combination, a strong isolated change in the short window, is exactly the kind of signal this tool is built to surface, without you manually comparing Net GEX from five minutes ago against right now.
At 10:15, ten minutes after the shift, the 5m column no longer shows that spike: the change in that particular window goes back to small, since the strong move already fell outside that five-minute window. The 15m column, on the other hand, still reflects it, because that change is still inside its time range.
Each column corresponds to a time window: Now, 1m, 5m, 10m, 15m, 30m. Each one shows the gamma exposure change value for that window. A more intense color marks a bigger change. A more neutral color marks stability. Instead of reading a single number, you read the full pattern across short and long windows.

A heatmap with all six columns in a neutral color, no spikes on any window, is also useful information. It confirms options positioning is holding steady, with no new pressure building up on any time horizon. On a session like that, the weight of the decision shifts more toward the structural levels, Call Wall, Put Wall, Long Wall, and Short Fuel, than toward how fast aggregate gamma is changing.
That flat read doesn't mean there's nothing to do. It means the speed context is calm, and the reaction zones from the rest of the suite are what set the pace of the session. Recognizing a session like that early saves time that would otherwise go into hunting for acceleration signals that simply aren't present at that moment.
Some sessions show a different pattern altogether: several distinct spikes on the short windows, one after another, spaced a few minutes apart. Say the 5m column lights up at 10:05, settles down by 10:12, then lights up again at 10:20, and once more at 10:31. Each spike on its own would read as an isolated, fast move. Seen together, that repeated pattern tells a different story: gamma exposure is being actively reshaped through the whole stretch, not adjusting once and settling.
That kind of session usually calls for a different rhythm than a single clean spike does. Instead of treating the first jump as the signal and moving on, it's worth watching whether the pattern keeps repeating. A string of spikes across a short stretch of the session often lines up with periods where the market itself is more active, which is exactly why cross-checking this heatmap with price action, not just with the Regime card, adds value on days like that. Once the spikes stop appearing and the short windows go quiet again, that's the cue the burst of activity has run its course.
The first few minutes of a session deserve a slightly different read than the rest of the day. Overnight positioning resolves quickly once trading opens, and that resolution can show up as a sharp change across several windows at once, simply because the tool is comparing the fresh open against numbers from before the session started. That opening burst isn't the same thing as a mid-session spike driven by active repositioning: it's largely the market catching up to information that built up while it was closed.
Because of that, a strong reading in the first five or ten minutes carries less weight on its own than the same reading would an hour into the session. It's worth letting the heatmap settle into its normal rhythm, roughly the first fifteen to twenty minutes, before treating any single window as a clean signal. After that early settling period, a spike means what it usually means: something changed just now, not simply that the session started.
Two strikes can carry the exact same absolute Net GEX and still be in completely different moments. One might be building pressure fast. The other might have been stable for a while. Without this speed read, both look identical on the map. With it, that difference shows up immediately.
That distinction connects directly to the regime read. According to CME Group (2026), Gamma describes how fast an option's Delta changes. That speed is exactly what forces dealers to keep readjusting their hedges continuously. According to Cboe (2023), short-dated options activity can build up and unwind within minutes of the same session. This tool is the most direct way to see that speed reflected in aggregate gamma exposure, not just in a single option.
The heatmap works off total Net GEX, a single aggregate number for the whole market. The strike profile works strike by strike, showing exactly where pressure concentrates at a given moment. The two together answer complementary questions: the speed read tells you whether something is changing right now, and the profile tells you exactly at which strike.
When a strong spike shows up on the 5m window, checking the strike profile right after usually reveals which strike drove that change. Without that second look, you'd know something moved, but not exactly where.
Does Max Change replace the Net GEX on the Regime card? No. Regime tells you the current state. This tool tells you how fast you got there and whether it's still moving.
Which time window matters most? It depends on your trading horizon. Traders looking for fast moves tend to check 1m-5m first. To confirm sustainability, cross-check with 15m-30m.
Does a high value always mean price is about to move? It's not a guarantee. It's a signal that hedging pressure is changing fast. It combines with the rest of your analysis, it doesn't replace price as the final confirmation.
Does the heatmap update live? Yes, along with the rest of the panel, on the same live feed.
Does it work the same across 0DTE, 1DTE, and ALL? Yes. It follows the same active horizon as the rest of the panel, so the read always corresponds to the gamma exposure of whichever horizon you have selected.
Why six time windows instead of just one? Because a real move almost never looks the same across every scale. Seeing all six together is what lets you tell a one-minute spike apart from a move that genuinely holds.
What if every window looks neutral for hours? There's no need to force a read where there isn't one. A session with a flat heatmap is still a valid session; the rest of the suite, especially the structural levels, keeps giving enough context to trade.
Does a string of repeated spikes mean something different than one isolated spike? Yes. One spike usually means a single fast adjustment. Several spikes spaced a few minutes apart tend to reflect a longer stretch of active repositioning, worth watching until the pattern settles down.
Should I ignore Max Change during the first few minutes of the session? Not entirely, but give it less weight than later readings. Overnight positioning resolving at the open can look like a spike without reflecting active intraday repositioning.
