What the Strike Profile Is and Why It Changes Your Read

GCIStrikeProfile shows how options pressure is distributed across strikes, not just at the strongest level. How to read it inside NinjaTrader 8.

The strike profile is the view a single highlighted level is missing. The Call Wall and Put Wall tell you where the strongest strike sits. But the market doesn't concentrate all its pressure on a single point. It spreads it across dozens of strikes, at different intensities. GCIStrikeProfile is the NT8 suite component that draws that full distribution alongside your chart.

This guide explains what this horizontal view is, why looking only at the strongest level leaves important information out, and how to read it inside NinjaTrader 8.

What a Strike Profile Is

It's a horizontal view. Every strike in the options chain shows as a bar. Length is proportional to the magnitude of whichever metric you pick at that strike. Instead of a single aggregate number, like total Net GEX, or a single highlighted level, like the Call Wall, you see the full distribution. You see which strikes carry the most pressure. You see which ones are secondary. You see how intensity fades as you move away from price.

According to CME Group, open interest measures how many contracts remain active at each strike. That distribution of open positions determines where dealer hedging pressure concentrates across the entire market.

An Example of the Profile in Action

For example, imagine price sits at 21,360. The Call Wall marks 21,420 as the strongest strike. But this view shows something more: the 21,400 strike also carries a sizable bar. Its size is close to 70% of the 21,420 bar.

Those two strikes together form a wider resistance zone than the Call Wall alone suggests. Without the full distribution, that second bar would stay invisible. You'd only see the strongest level. You wouldn't know the neighboring strike also carries meaningful pressure.

A bit further out, at 21,460, a third bar shows up, but much smaller. That drop in intensity, from a large bar to a medium one and then a small one, is exactly the pattern that confirms where the real reaction zone ends and where minor noise begins.

Why the Strongest Level Doesn't Tell the Whole Story

The Call Wall and Put Wall mark the two heaviest concentration points. But between those two extremes, and beyond them, secondary strikes exist. They also generate pressure, just less of it. Looking only at the strongest level is like looking only at a mountain's peak. You miss the rest of the slope.

This view shows you that slope. According to Investopedia, the Greeks are the tool an options trader uses to understand how a position reacts to price changes, strike by strike. That same logic applies at a market-wide level, not just to a single position. According to Cboe (2023), the distribution of volume across the options chain reveals where real activity concentrates. It goes beyond a single highlighted strike.

How to Read the Profile in GCIStrikeProfile

The indicator draws a horizontal bar for every active strike. Width is proportional to the absolute value of the chosen metric at that strike. Color distinguishes positive pressure from negative pressure. You can choose which side of the chart it shows on (Side: right or left). You can adjust the maximum bar width to fit your layout.

Volume vs. Open Interest: Two Ways to Count the Same Pressure

When the metric is GEX, the calculation can run on Volume, today's activity, or on Open Interest, positions still open. Volume shows you where trading is actively happening today. Open Interest shows you where a position has already accumulated. It doesn't matter whether there was new activity at that strike today. Both reads are useful, but they answer different questions. One is about today's flow. The other is about structural positioning.

A strike can carry low Volume and high Open Interest at the same time. That means a large position already accumulated there. But almost no trading is happening at that point today. It's a read of historical positioning, not recent activity.

How the Profile Looks When the Market Moves Fast

In sessions with strong moves, several bars on the profile can update almost at the same time, because options positioning adjusts across multiple strikes at once. That doesn't mean the indicator is malfunctioning: it's exactly the visual reflection of pressure redistributing across nearby strikes, something a single highlighted level could never show.

In calmer sessions, the pattern looks different. Bars change size gradually, strike by strike, without sharp jumps. Comparing how the profile looks in a quiet session versus an active one, on the same asset, is a direct way to gauge how active options positioning is at that moment.

Comparing the Profile of Two Different Assets at the Same Time

Running GCIStrikeProfile on two charts side by side, each on a different instrument, is a useful way to see how differently pressure concentrates from one asset to another. One asset might show a tall, narrow spike at a single strike with almost nothing on either side. Another might show a wider, flatter distribution spread across several strikes with none of them clearly dominant.

Neither shape is more correct than the other; they simply reflect how positioning happens to be structured on each instrument at that moment. What matters is reading each profile on its own terms rather than expecting the same shape everywhere. A trader who follows more than one asset benefits from checking this side by side occasionally, since it builds a sense of how concentrated or spread out pressure typically looks on each one, which makes it easier to tell an unusual reading apart from a normal one later.

What It Means When the Profile Has No Clear Dominant Strike

Most of the time, one or two bars clearly stand taller than the rest, and those tend to line up with the Call Wall and Put Wall drawn on the chart. Occasionally, though, the profile looks noticeably flatter than usual: a dozen strikes all carrying bars of similar length, with none of them pulling far enough ahead to read as a clear structural anchor.

That flat shape isn't a malfunction, and it isn't necessarily a bad thing to trade around. It usually means positioning is spread thin across a wide range of strikes rather than concentrated at one or two, which often shows up during periods when the market hasn't settled on a direction yet. In that kind of profile, the Call Wall and Put Wall drawn on the chart still mark the tallest bars technically, but the gap between them and the next few strikes is small enough that price may not respect either one as cleanly as it would on a day with a sharper, more concentrated profile. Recognizing that shape early, rather than assuming the strongest bar will behave the same way it does on a normal day, is what keeps a trader from expecting more precision out of the map than the current distribution actually supports.

How to Use This View Alongside the Rest of the Suite

GCIStrikeProfile gives you the full detail of how that pressure is distributed across every nearby strike. Used together, you confirm whether the strongest level truly dominates the map. You also confirm whether secondary strikes are competing nearby. That's something you only see with the full distribution, not a single highlighted level.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the strike profile replace the Call Wall and Put Wall? No. The Call Wall and Put Wall remain the two most relevant levels on the map. This view adds the detail of everything around them.

How many strikes does it show? Every active strike within your chart's visible range, adjusted by the selected Expiration.

Can I see the Volume and Open Interest distribution at the same time? The Gex Basis selector determines which one you're viewing at any given moment. To compare, you switch the selector.

Can a secondary strike with a large bar become more relevant than the Call Wall? This view only describes the current distribution. Reading which strike dominates depends on the relative magnitude between bars. You see that directly, without having to calculate it.

Does a strike's bar change size during the session? Yes. It recalculates off the same live feed as the rest of the suite, so the relative size of each bar can shift while the market trades.

Does the profile look the same across different assets? Not necessarily. Every asset has its own options chain and its own pressure distribution, so the number of visible bars and their shape can vary from one instrument to another.

Is a narrow, tall profile better than a wide, flat one? Neither is inherently better. They just describe different ways pressure is structured on that particular asset at that moment, and both are read the same way: relative bar size, strike by strike.

What should I do when the profile looks flat with no clear leader? Treat the Call Wall and Put Wall with a bit less certainty than usual, and lean more on the Regime and Space cards until the profile sharpens back up.
